Jesus Loves Me by Chris Hall

Rain came down the other day,
Came and washed my dreams away;
Now there's nothing left for me to say
Except for maybe goodbye.

Now I'm wandering with this anger in my heart;
I can't release it, it's tearing me apart.
Don't you talk to me, don't even start
'Cos you don't know the way I feel inside.

Don't you tell me Jesus loves me,
Don't you tell me that he cares;
Don't you tell me that he's been in my shoes
And he hears my prayers.

And so you find me in this dead-end street,
I've got no shoes, I feel the cold under my feet.
All I want is some bread to eat
Just to keep me alive.

Don't walk past and ignore my cries;
Turn around and look me in the eyes.
How dare you criticize
When you don't know the way I feel inside?

Don't you tell me Jesus loves me,
Don't you tell me that he cares;
Don't you tell me that he's been in my shoes
And he hears my prayers.

Behind the Music

I wrote this song whilst working in Birmingham city centre, petty often seeing people sleeping and living on the streets. From time to time I'd have occasion to either give them some change, or something to eat, and as someone who's experienced the positive difference God can make in his life, I also wanted to encourage them to look to God for him to help them in their situation. But I was aware that I didn't really know their situation, and in fact, we rarely know the circumstances that have brought each of us to where we are in life.

It seems to me that we often assume to know more about those around us than we actually do, which can make it easy to stand in judgement and provide unnecessary and unwanted solutions. I've certainly been on the receving end of 'pat' answers to my problems which did nothing to help nor change the situation.

This song serves as a reminder to me to not be too hasty. The only way to get to know someone is to talk and spend time with them. So before we consider offering a solution, perhaps we should take the time to find out the story. Maybe the solution is just a listening ear, or a shoulder to lean on, or a prayer. Maybe it's more. But the only way to find out is to sit and share.
