Dark Friday
by Michelle & Chris Hall

You want to know my love?
You've gotta drink my blood.
Go on and take this cup
An' drain every last drop.
Let my blood be your life,
Call it your sacrifice;
Let it penetrate your being,
Flow down deep into your heart and transform you inside.

'Cos I am the one, I am the one who loves you;
I am the one, I am the one who wants you.
I am the one, the only one who'll free you
From the numbness of this ordinary life.

Take my body,
Get it under your skin;
I'm not looking for perfection,
I'll take your sin.
Taste my flesh,
Come on and eat me up;
Let me fill you with my sweetness,
Waking up your hunger for my satisfying love.

'Cos I am the one, I am the one who knows you;
I am the one, I am the one who sees you.
I am the one, the only one who'll free you
From the numbness of this ordinary life.

I'm not afraid of no cross,
'Cos death can't do me no harm;
Yeah, they killed me once, but I wouldn't stay dead
Much to everyone's alarm.
I proved my love
Is stronger than the grave;
I'm the one and only, the Lord of life,
And I ain't nobody's slave.

'Cos I am the one, I am the one who calls you;
I am the one, I am the one who claims you.
I am the one, the only one who'll save you
From the numbness of this ordinary life

Behind the Music

On the one hand this song is just a bit of fun about vampires and the mythology that goes along with them. On the other, the song is an exploration of the rather unusual teachings of Jesus to the crowds and to his disciples . . .

"I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. . . the one who feeds on me will live because of me." (John 6:53-57 but to get a clearer understanding of what he's saying, best to read the full contenxt - John 6:1-68. Similar words were used by Jesus when he spoke to his disciples at their final meal together before heading out to his mock trial and wrongful execution - Matthew 26:20-29.)

Hence the title 'Dark Friday' which is a reference to the fateful day when Jesus was crucified, but who was then brought back to life by God to continue living forever, the Lord of Life, slave to no-one and nothing. And as much as Michelle & I enjoy vampire stories and films, the fictitious Edward and Bella have got nothing on the real Jesus!

Musically this song owes a lot to Jace Everett and his vampire-connected song 'Bad Things'.
